Amanda’s Favorite Supplements

As a registered dietitian, it does not matter when or where, I often get asked nutrition and health questions as soon as a person learns of my career. “What diet do you follow?” “How much water should I drink?” “What are your favorite healthy snacks?” I appreciate a person’s interest in learning more about food and health and enjoy these Q & A sessions. These conversations often also lead to supplement and vitamin questions. The questions range from “What vitamins should I take for my condition?” to “What are your personal favorite vitamins and supplements?” Therefore, let us dive into my favorites together:

Fish Oil – I’m a person who enjoys working out and lifting weights. But my joints don’t always love me back! So I ensure that I take fish oil on a daily basis to help not only reduce inflammation but to also support heart health, brain function and immunity.

How it may help you:
Lowers triglyceride levels and reduces risk of heart disease
Aids in baby’s health and development for those pregnant or breastfeeding
Improves cognitive function; lowers risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia

Vitamin D – Even though I love sunshine, living in the Midwest does not always allow my body to get this “sunshine” vitamin naturally. Therefore, I take vitamin D on a daily basis to ensure I am getting adequate amounts of this mood-boosting vitamin, which also helps strengthen bone density and immune function.

How it may help you:
Supports prevention of osteoporosis
Fights off bacteria and viruses

Vitamin B12 – As a full-time working mom of 3 busy kids, having a jam-packed schedule with work, sports and activities can cause stress on my body. That is when vitamin B12 comes in to help. Taking this water-soluble vitamin helps fill in any gaps that may come from my diet to help promote normal function of nerve cells.

How it may help you:
Helps form red blood cells and DNA
A key player in helping develop brain and nerve cells

In conclusion, I often remind anyone who I talk with regarding vitamins that it is important to note that a healthy balanced diet should come first when considering a healthy lifestyle. However, you may need to consider adding specific vitamins and mineral supplements such as my favorites described here into your day to help fill any nutrient gaps.
